The Machine That Wasn’t Level

We shipped a machine to the customer. On the floor, the operator complained: the conveyor belt tracked to one side, the drawer stuck, and the machine vibrated more than expected. We sent a technician. The machine wasn’t level — the customer had just put it on the floor bolts without checking. The frame was twisted (one corner 5 mm high). We adjusted the leveling feet (article 79) until the frame was level (within 0.5 mm over the length). The belt tracked straight, the drawer slid, and the vibration dropped. The mistake was shipping the machine without a detailed leveling procedure. The customer (or the installer) skipped it.

Why Leveling Matters

A machine’s frame isn’t perfectly flat from the factory (weld distortion, article 107). On the floor, the floor itself isn’t flat (it has dips and slopes). The leveling feet (article 79) let you adjust each corner independently, making the frame flat.

If the frame isn’t flat:

  • Conveyor belt tracking: The belt wanders (it runs to the high side).
  • Linear guide binding: The guide rails aren’t parallel (the axis binds).
  • Drawer/door sticking: The frame is twisted (the drawer doesn’t slide).
  • Vibration: The frame rocks (one foot bounces).

Step 1: Leveling Feet (Adjustable)

Every machine has leveling feet (article 79). The feet have a bolt (threaded) that adjusts the height. Turn the bolt, and the machine corner rises or lowers. A lock nut holds the setting.

The number of feet: a machine needs at least 3 feet (to define a plane). Four feet is standard (one at each corner), but if the floor is uneven, the fourth foot might not touch (the machine rocks). Use a slotted foot (or a spring-loaded foot) for the fourth corner, or adjust all four carefully.

Step 2: Leveling Procedure

  1. Put the machine in place: On the customer’s floor (where it will run).
  2. Lower all feet: The machine rests on the feet (not on its skids).
  3. Check level: Use a precision level (0.02 mm/m) on the machine’s reference surface (a machined pad, the linear rail).
  4. Adjust the feet: Raise/lower each corner until the frame is level (both axes).
  5. Check twist: Measure the diagonals (or use a dial indicator across the frame). The frame shouldn’t twist.
  6. Tighten the lock nuts: After leveling, lock the feet.
  7. Recheck after a day: The feet might settle. Recheck and adjust.

The leveling rule: Level the frame on the reference surface (not the floor). The machine that misbehaved was on an unlevel floor. Use a precision level on the machined pad, adjust all four feet, and lock them. A belt that tracks off isn’t the belt — it’s the frame.

Step 3: Leveling Tolerance

How level is level enough?

  • Conveyor: 0.5 mm over the length (the belt tracks straight).
  • Linear rail axis: 0.1 mm over the rail (the axis moves smoothly).
  • Press or precision station: 0.05 mm (the work is precise).
  • General frame: 1 mm (no rocking).

Put the tolerance in the installation manual. The installer (and the customer) knows what “level” means.

Step 4: Anchoring

After leveling, anchor the machine to the floor (anchor bolts, chemical anchors). Without anchoring, the machine walks (vibration moves it). The anchor bolts go through the foot’s mounting hole into the floor.

For a vibrating machine (a press, a vibratory feeder), anchor it firmly. For a light conveyor, anchoring is optional (the feet hold it).

Step 5: Site Prep (Before Delivery)

Before the machine ships, tell the customer what the site needs:

  • Floor flatness: The floor should be flat within 5 mm over the machine’s footprint (otherwise the feet can’t compensate).
  • Power and air: Near the machine (article 57, 84).
  • Clearance: Room around the machine (for maintenance, article 109).
  • Rigging path: The path to get the machine in the door.

Include a site prep document (article 90) with the machine. The customer prepares the site before delivery.

A Leveling Checklist

  1. Is the machine on the final floor?
  2. Are all feet contacting the floor? (No rocking?)
  3. Is the level checked on the machined reference? (Not the painted frame?)
  4. Is the level within tolerance? (Conveyor 0.5, axis 0.1?)
  5. Is the twist checked? (Diagonals?)
  6. Are the lock nuts tightened?
  7. Is the machine anchored? (If vibrating?)
  8. Recheck after 24 hours? (Feet settled?)
  9. Is the leveling procedure in the manual? (For the customer?)
  10. Is the floor flat enough? (Site prep?)
