The Wear Strip That Wore Out in a Month
We built a belt conveyor. The belt ran on a flat bed (a steel pan under the belt). At first, it ran fine. After a month, the belt was worn through at the middle — the steel bed had a rough spot (a weld bead left proud). The belt rubbed on the rough spot and wore. We had ground the bed flat (after welding), but a small weld bead was missed. We added a UHMW (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) wear strip over the steel bed. The belt now slides on the smooth UHMW, not the steel. The wear stopped. The mistake was using raw steel as the sliding surface — it’s rough and abrasive.

What the Wear Strip Does
On a slider-bed conveyor (the belt slides on a flat bed under it), the bed supports the belt. The belt rubs on the bed as it moves. The bed material must be:
- Smooth: Low friction (the belt slides easily).
- Wear-resistant: Doesn’t wear out fast.
- Non-abrasive: Doesn’t grind the belt.
Raw steel is not ideal — it’s rough (weld beads, mill scale) and abrasive. Use a wear strip (a plastic layer) over the steel.

Step 1: UHMW is Standard
UHMW (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) is the standard wear strip. It’s smooth, low-friction, and wear-resistant. It comes in sheets (cut to size) or extruded strips (with a T-slot that clips onto the conveyor frame).
For a slider-bed conveyor, lay UHMW sheets (3–6 mm thick) over the steel bed. The belt slides on the UHMW. The UHMW is replaceable (when it wears, peel it off and glue on a new sheet).
The wear strip rule: Don’t run the belt on raw steel. Use UHMW (or HDPE) over the steel bed. The conveyor that wore the belt had a rough steel bed. Add UHMW sheets, and the belt lasts. UHMW is cheap, smooth, and replaceable.
Step 2: Friction and Motor Power
The belt drags on the wear strip. The friction adds to the motor load (article 57). The drag force is:
F_drag = μ × (load + belt weight)
For UHMW (μ = 0.2), a 10 kg load: F_drag = 0.2 × 10 × 9.8 = 20 N. For raw steel (μ = 0.4): F_drag = 40 N. The motor must overcome the drag. UHMW halves the drag (and the motor size).
For a long conveyor, the drag adds up. Use UHMW to keep the motor small.
Step 3: Wear Strip for Roller Conveyors
On a roller conveyor (article 41), the product rolls on rollers (not slides). No wear strip needed (the rollers turn). But the product’s bottom might slide on the roller (if the roller is sticky or the product is soft). For soft products (bags), use a low-friction roller (plastic, not steel).
Step 4: Wear Strip for Side Rails
The conveyor’s side rails (which guide the product) also wear. The product rubs on the rails as it moves. Use UHMW strips on the rail’s inner face (where the product touches). The product slides on UHMW (smooth, low friction), not on steel.
Step 5: Replacement and Maintenance
The wear strip is a consumable. It wears over time (especially with abrasive products — wood chips, metal parts). Plan for replacement:
- Clipped strips: UHMW strips that clip into a T-slot (no glue). Pop out and replace.
- Glued sheets: UHMW sheets glued to the bed. Peel off and re-glue.
- Spare strips: Keep a roll of UHMW strip in the maintenance stock.
A Wear Strip Checklist
- Is the conveyor a slider bed? (Belt slides on a bed?)
- Is the bed material UHMW (not raw steel)?
- Is the UHMW thickness enough? (3–6 mm?)
- Is the friction (μ) accounted for in the motor sizing?
- Are the side rails lined with UHMW?
- Is the wear strip replaceable? (Clipped or glued?)
- Are spare strips in stock?
- Is the bed flat? (No weld beads?)
- Is the belt tracking checked? (Wear strip doesn’t affect tracking?)
- Is the product abrasive? (More frequent replacement?)
