The Wire That Was Wrong Color (Service Nightmare)
We wired a machine (electrical). The wires were random colors (the electrician used what was in the box). On the floor (1 year later), maintenance had to trace a wire (which sensor is which). The colors didn’t match (a red wire was a signal, a blue wire was +24V). The technician wasted hours (tracing every wire). The problem: no color code (the wires were random). We (on the next machine) used a color code (per IEC). The technician traced the wires (by color) in minutes. The mistake was not using a color code (the wiring was a nightmare to service).
Wire color codes make the wiring serviceable. This article covers the standard.
The IEC Color Code (24V DC)
For a 24V DC (PLC/sensor) system (IEC 60204-1):
- Brown: +24V (the power positive).
- Blue: 0V (the power negative, the common).
- Black: Signal (the sensor output, the PLC input).
- Yellow/green: PE (ground, protective earth, article 169).
Step 1: The Sensor (Article 181)
A PNP sensor (article 181) has 3 wires: brown (+24V), blue (0V), black (signal). Wire them per the color (brown to +24V, blue to 0V, black to the PLC input). The colors are standard (any technician knows).
The color rule: Use the IEC colors: brown +24V, blue 0V, black signal, yellow/green PE. The wiring that was a nightmare had random colors. Use the standard (the technician traces by color). Don’t use random (it’s a service trap).
Step 2: The AC Power (3-Phase)
For a 3-phase AC (the mains, the motor):
- Black/brown/gray: The phases (L1, L2, L3).
- Blue: Neutral (N).
- Yellow/green: PE (ground, article 169).
Step 3: Labels (Article 170)
The colors are the first clue. But every wire also has a label (article 170, a heat-shrink tag). The label shows the wire’s ID (e.g., “I0.0”). The technician traces the wire (color first, then the label). Don’t rely on color alone (for a complex panel, many wires are black signal).
Step 4: The Stripe (For Multi-Core)
For a multi-core cable (many wires), use the stripe (brown with a blue stripe, etc.). The stripe codes the function. For a sensor cable (3-wire), use the solid colors (brown/blue/black).

The Bottom Line
Wire color codes make the wiring serviceable. The wiring that was a nightmare had random colors. Use IEC (brown +24V, blue 0V, black signal, yellow/green PE). Add labels (article 170). The panel that was easy to service wasn’t the prettiest wiring — it was color-coded.
