The Cylinder That Retracted Too Slowly

We used a double-acting cylinder to push a part. On extend, it moved fast (the supply air filled the cap end). On retract, it was slow — the rod side air had to go back through the solenoid valve (a long path). The exhaust air backed up. The retract took 1.5 s (vs 0.3 s extend). The takt time (article 120) suffered. We added a quick exhaust valve (QE) on the rod side. The rod-side air exhausts locally (right at the cylinder) through the QE (not back through the valve). The retract was fast (0.3 s). The takt improved. The mistake was not adding a quick exhaust for a fast retract.

What a Quick Exhaust Does

A standard circuit: the solenoid valve (article 90) supplies air to the cylinder, and the exhaust air goes back through the valve (a long path, through the tubing). For a fast cylinder, the exhaust backs up (the air can’t escape fast enough). The cylinder slows on the return stroke.

A quick exhaust valve (QE) mounts right at the cylinder (on the rod end). When the valve switches (to retract), the QE opens (it exhausts the rod-side air directly to atmosphere — not back through the solenoid). The rod-side air escapes instantly. The cylinder retracts fast.

Step 1: When to Use a QE

Use a quick exhaust when:

  • The retract (or extend) must be fast: The takt time (article 120) needs a fast stroke.
  • The cylinder is far from the valve: The tubing is long (the exhaust path is slow). The QE cuts the path.
  • The cylinder is large (bore): A big cylinder pushes a lot of air (it needs fast exhaust). A QE helps.

For a small cylinder (Ø20 mm, short tubing), the standard exhaust is fine (it’s already fast). For a big cylinder (Ø50 mm, long tubing), add a QE.

The quick exhaust rule: For a fast retract (or extend) on a big cylinder, add a QE valve at the cylinder. The cylinder that retracted slowly had a long exhaust path. The QE exhausts locally (fast). But the QE is one-directional (it speeds one stroke, not both). For a fast both-ways, use a flow control (article 124) on both sides.

Step 2: One Stroke, Not Both

A QE speeds one stroke (the one that needs fast exhaust). For a double-acting cylinder, the QE is on the rod side (it speeds retract). The extend (cap side) still goes through the valve (slow). If you need fast both ways, add QEs on both sides (or use a higher-flow valve).

Step 3: Speed Control (Article 124)

A QE makes the stroke fast (no flow control on that stroke). If you need to control the speed (meter-out, article 124), the QE bypasses the flow control (the exhaust goes through the QE, not the flow valve). You can’t have both (fast exhaust AND speed control on the same stroke). For a fast-but-controlled stroke, use a flow control (article 124) (slower but controlled). For a fast-and-uncontrolled stroke (e.g., a spring return), use the QE.

Step 4: Noise (Article 75)

A QE exhausts air loudly (a quick puff). For a noisy environment, add a muffler (article 75) on the QE’s exhaust port. The muffler reduces the noise (but adds a little back pressure). For a quiet machine, muffle the QE.

The Bottom Line

Pneumatic quick exhaust valve speeds one stroke by exhausting locally. The cylinder that retracted slowly had a long exhaust path. Add a QE on the fast stroke (big cylinder, long tubing). It’s one-directional (not both ways). Add a muffler (for noise). The cylinder that retracted fast wasn’t the biggest bore — it had a QE.
