Vacuum System Maintenance: Filter, Cups, Leaks and Ejector

The Vacuum That Lost Grip After a Shift

We used a vacuum generator (ejector, article 73) with a suction cup to lift metal parts. The vacuum held at the start of the shift. After a few hours, the grip weakened — the vacuum didn’t reach the setpoint. The part slipped. The problem: the vacuum filter (between the ejector and the cup) was clogged with dust (from the metal parts). The filter restricted the flow. The ejector couldn’t pull enough vacuum. We replaced the filter. The vacuum came back. The mistake was not maintaining the filter (it clogged with dust). We added a filter pressure gauge (shows when the filter is clogged). The operator sees the gauge and changes the filter before it fails.

Vacuum system maintenance keeps the vacuum strong. A clogged filter or a leaky fitting weakens the grip. This article covers the maintenance.

The Vacuum System

A vacuum gripper system (article 113) has:

  • Vacuum generator (ejector or pump): Creates the vacuum.
  • Vacuum filter: Protects the ejector from dust/oil (the air being sucked in passes through it).
  • Vacuum tank (reservoir): Holds vacuum (cushions leaks).
  • Vacuum switch: Confirms the vacuum is reached.
  • Suction cups: Touch the part.

Step 1: Filter Maintenance

The vacuum filter traps dust, chips, and oil (from the sucked air). Over time, it clogs. The ejector can’t pull enough air. The vacuum drops.

  • Visual: Many filters have a transparent bowl (you can see the dirt).
  • Pressure gauge: A gauge on the filter shows the pressure drop. If the drop is high (filter clogged), replace it.
  • Time: Every 3–6 months (depending on the dust level). In a dirty environment (wood, metal chips), every month.

Keep spare filters in stock (article 100). A clogged filter stops the gripper.

The vacuum maintenance rule: The filter is the #1 wear item. The grip that weakened had a clogged filter. Add a pressure gauge (shows the drop), replace the filter every 3–6 months (sooner if dusty). Keep spares.

Step 2: Leak Check

Vacuum systems leak. A leaky fitting, a worn cup, or a cracked hose weakens the vacuum. To check:

  • Seal the cup (block it): Cover the cup with a flat plate. The vacuum should reach the setpoint quickly and hold (the switch confirms). If it’s slow or won’t hold, there’s a leak.
  • Listen/hiss: A leaky fitting hisses. Listen (or use a leak detector).
  • Tug the hoses: A loose hose pulls off. Check the fittings.

Step 3: Suction Cup Wear

The suction cup (article 113) wears (the sealing edge cracks). A worn cup leaks (doesn’t seal). Inspect the cups monthly. If the sealing edge is cracked or deformed, replace the cup.

For high cycles (millions of picks), the cup wears in weeks. Keep spare cups in stock.

Step 4: Ejector (or Pump) Maintenance

A vacuum ejector (article 73) has no moving parts (it’s a Venturi). Maintenance is: check the supply air (it must be clean, dry — article 84). A dirty air supply clogs the ejector’s nozzle.

A vacuum pump (for continuous use, article 73) has moving parts (pistons, vanes). It needs oil changes (oil-sealed pumps) and filter replacements. Follow the pump manufacturer’s schedule.

Step 5: Vacuum Switch Check

The vacuum switch (article 115) confirms the grip. Test it monthly: block the cup, check that the switch triggers at the right vacuum. If the switch is out of adjustment, the robot moves before the grip is secure (or doesn’t move when it is). Calibrate the switch.

A Vacuum System Checklist

  1. Is the filter clean? (Pressure gauge?)
  2. When was the filter last replaced?
  3. Are the suction cups in good shape? (Cracks?)
  4. Is there a leak? (Block the cup test?)
  5. Are the hoses/fittings tight?
  6. Does the vacuum switch trigger at the right setpoint?
  7. Is the supply air clean? (FRL, article 119?)
  8. Is the reservoir holding vacuum? (Leaks?)
  9. Are spare filters and cups in stock?
  10. Is the maintenance schedule in the manual?

The Bottom Line

Vacuum system maintenance is filter, cups, and leaks. The grip that weakened had a clogged filter. Add a filter pressure gauge, replace the filter every 3–6 months, inspect the cups monthly, and check for leaks (block the cup test). Keep spares. The gripper that holds every part wasn’t the strongest ejector — it had clean filters and no leaks.
