The Cylinder That Seized After a Month
We mounted a pneumatic cylinder with a rigid flange (a front flange bolted to a plate). The cylinder extended and pushed a slide. On the bench, it moved fine. On the floor, after a month, the cylinder’s piston rod started to bind — the rod seal wore. The cylinder was stiff. The problem: the flange mounting was perfectly rigid, but the slide (the load on the rod) wasn’t perfectly aligned with the cylinder. The side load on the rod (from misalignment) wore the rod bushing and seal. We added a floating joint (rod-end bearing) between the rod and the slide. The cylinder no longer fought the misalignment. The binding stopped. The mistake was using a rigid rod connection on a load that wasn’t perfectly aligned.

Cylinder Mounting Styles
Foot (Lug) Mounting
The cylinder bolts down on two feet (lugs) under the barrel. The cylinder is fixed (doesn’t pivot). The load moves in line with the cylinder. Standard for a push/pull in a fixed direction.
Best for: A fixed axis (the load moves along the cylinder’s centerline).
Front/Rear Flange Mounting
The cylinder bolts to a flange (at the front cap or rear cap). The cylinder is fixed. The rod comes out through the flange. Good when the cylinder mounts to a plate (a bulkhead).
Best for: Mounting through a panel or bulkhead.
Clevis (Eye) Mounting
The cylinder mounts with a clevis (a pin joint) at the rear. The cylinder pivots as the rod extends (the load moves in an arc). Used for a clamp or a gripper that rotates.
Best for: Pivoting loads (clamps, lever arms).
Trunnion Mounting
The cylinder pivots around a trunnion (a pin through the middle of the barrel). The cylinder rotates as the rod extends. Similar to clevis but pivot in the middle.

Step 1: Rigid vs Floating Rod Connection
The rod connects to the load. The connection matters:
- Rigid (threaded rod directly to load): No flexibility. If the load isn’t perfectly aligned with the cylinder, side loads wear the rod bushing. Use only when the load is guided (on linear bearings) and aligned.
- Floating joint (rod-end bearing, or clevis joint): A swivel (a bearing) between the rod and the load. It tolerates misalignment (angular and side). The cylinder doesn’t fight the load.
For a slide on linear guides (the load is guided), a rigid connection is fine (the guides keep it aligned). For an unguided load (a clamp arm), use a floating joint.
The cylinder mounting rule: Use a floating joint (rod-end bearing) unless the load is guided on linear bearings. The cylinder that seized had a rigid rod on a misaligned slide. Add a floating joint, and the rod doesn’t bind. For pivoting loads, use a clevis mount (not foot).
Step 2: Side Load on the Rod
The cylinder’s rod is designed for axial force (push/pull). Side load (perpendicular to the rod) wears the rod bushing. Don’t push the load from the side of the rod — guide the load on linear bearings (article 52). The cylinder only provides axial force; the guides handle the side load.
If the cylinder must push an unguided load (a clamp), keep the stroke short (less leverage) and use a larger bore (stiffer rod).
Step 3: Pivoting Cylinder (Clevis)
For a pivoting cylinder (clevis or trunnion), the rod-end also pivots (a floating joint at the load). The cylinder rotates as the rod extends. Both ends are pinned (a rod-end bearing at the load, a clevis at the rear). No binding.
Step 4: Cylinder Bushing and Bearing
Modern cylinders have a integrated rod bushing (a bronze or plastic bushing in the front cap). It supports the rod. For long strokes (over 500 mm), add a external rod bearing (a guide) to support the rod (the cylinder’s own bushing isn’t enough for a long, heavy rod).

- Mounting style? (Foot, flange, clevis, trunnion?)
- Is the rod connection rigid or floating? (Floating for unguided?)
- Is there side load on the rod? (Guided by linear bearings?)

- Is the stroke enough? (With margin?)
