The Cylinder That Wouldn’t Retract Fast Enough
We used a double-acting cylinder to push a part. The extend speed was fine. The retract was slow — the cylinder took 2 seconds to pull back. The problem: the air on the retract side had to travel all the way back through the 5/3 valve to exhaust. The tubing (3 meters long) restricted the exhaust. We added a quick exhaust valve (QE valve) right at the cylinder’s retract port. The air exhausted locally (not through the valve). The retract time dropped to 0.5 seconds. The mistake was routing the exhaust through a long tube.
Pneumatic quick exhaust valve lets the air escape at the cylinder, not at the valve. It speeds up the return stroke. This article covers when and where to use it.
How a Quick Exhaust Valve Works
A standard cylinder circuit: the 5/3 (or 5/2) valve has two work ports. Air flows from the valve through the tube to the cylinder. When the valve switches, the exhaust air must flow back through the same tube, through the valve, and out the muffler. A long tube = slow exhaust = slow stroke.
A quick exhaust valve (QE valve) mounts directly on the cylinder’s port. When the valve switches, the QE valve opens a local exhaust port (to atmosphere). The exhaust air doesn’t go back through the tube — it escapes locally. The cylinder moves faster.
Step 1: When to Use a QE Valve
Use a QE valve when:
- The valve is far from the cylinder (long tube, over 2 m).
- The stroke must be fast (high cycle rate).
- The cylinder is large (big bore, lots of air to exhaust).
- The retract (or extend) must snap back fast (e.g., a return spring, a safety gate).
Don’t use a QE valve when:
- The cylinder must be speed-controlled (a flow control on the exhaust, article 86). The QE valve bypasses the flow control. You lose speed control.
- The cylinder has end cushioning (article 86). The QE valve can interfere with the cushion adjustment.
- The application is slow (no need for speed).
The QE valve rule: Put it at the cylinder port for fast retract (or extend). The cylinder that retracted slowly had the valve 3 m away. Add a QE valve at the retract port. But don’t use it where you need speed control (it bypasses the flow control).
Step 2: Sizing the QE Valve
The QE valve’s flow capacity must match the cylinder’s exhaust. It’s sized by port size (like a fitting). For a Ø32 mm cylinder, a 1/8″ or 1/4″ QE valve is fine. For a Ø80 mm cylinder, use 3/8″ or 1/2″.
If the QE valve is too small, it bottlenecks the exhaust (the cylinder still moves slowly). Match the QE valve’s flow to the cylinder’s exhaust volume.
Step 3: Combining with Speed Control
If you need fast extend but controlled retract (or vice versa):
- Use a flow control on the inlet (meter-in) for the controlled stroke.
- Use a QE valve on the exhaust for the fast stroke.
- This way, one stroke is fast (QE), the other is controlled (flow control).
Don’t put a flow control and a QE valve on the same port (they conflict). Put one on each port.
Step 4: Noise and Muffler
A QE valve exhausts directly to atmosphere (fast). That’s loud (a “bang” every cycle). Add a muffler (silencer) on the QE valve’s exhaust port (article 75). Without a muffler, the machine is noisy.

A QE Valve Checklist
- Is the valve far from the cylinder? (Over 2 m?)
- Does one stroke need to be fast? (Retract?)
- Is the other stroke speed-controlled? (Flow control?)
- Are the QE valve and flow control on different ports? (No conflict?)
- Is the QE valve sized for the cylinder bore?
- Is there a muffler on the QE exhaust? (Noise?)
- Does the cylinder have end cushions? (QE valve compatible?)
- Is the fast stroke too fast? (Impact at end? Add shock absorber?)
